| Niagra Falls and The Ten Thousand Buddhas Temple. |
We woke up one morning (May 4,2002) and having nothing to do, we decided to drive to Niagra Falls. As usual it was a great trip, but this is our first trip with no kids. Thank the Lord they are grownup (they think) . Finally we can do what we want-when we want, so Niagra Falls here we come. We visited the usual spots and some new spots. We took a ride on the Maid of the Mist and got soaked to the bone, we descended to the base of Horseshoe Falls and took a journey behind the falls, drove down the river parkway, took a ride on the Spanish Aero Car, saw the giant floral clock, went to the House of Frankenstein and went to the World Peace Ten Thousand Buddhas Sarira Stupa Temple. The Temple opened in 1996, and has a six ton grand bell of world peace and a collection of buddhist paintings and over ten thousand statues of buddhas and bodhisattvas. It was a very, very, beautiful temple.

| At the Mountains of Madness by H. P. Lovecraft |
I first read this when I was 15, and I had never been exposed to H.P. Lovecraft prior. It was suggested to me by my friend. I found it excedingly dry, and hard to wade through. I finally asked my friend if it ever picked up.
He responded, "I have three words for you: GIANT ALBINO PENGUINS."
That carried me through to the end of the book and I thoroughly loved it. On the second read (at age 32) it was wonderful, and it captivated me the whole way through. In the 12 years between readings, I became more familiar with Lovecraft, and I became more familiar with all of the things that have borrowed from this story such as the X-Files movie and the Alien vs. Predator movie... basically, anything with aliens in Antarctica.
On a side note, there really were giant penguins in Antarctica at one time, but no longer, except in the Mountains of Madness.
It is a brilliant horrific story, building consistently, although much is left to the imagination, especially with the carvings and sculptures on the walls at varying levels of the narrator's descent. The reader who digests Lovecraft must, by necessity, have a vivid imagination, as he paints the picture with a light darkness and lets the reader interpret the depth of that darkness.
At the Mountains of Madness by H. P. Lovecraft is considered to be one of The Masterpieces of Horror Novels, and considered by me to be worthy of the mantle. This is a great read for fans of gothic horror. |
